Metropolis Ruhr 2011- Culture and Entertainment
The Ruhr Area as a holiday destination beyond the Capital of Culture year

A very special year for the Ruhr Area has begun: In 2010, the region will present itself as the European Capital of Culture. In addition to the offering of 200 museums, 100 cultural centres, 100 concert halls, 120 theatres and 3,500 industrial monuments in place in 53 towns, there will be hundreds of events, new museums as well as experimental and innovative offerings in an exciting array of modernism and tradition.

This year the ExtraSchicht - the Long Night of Industrial Culture - will take place in the Metropolis Ruhr for the tenth time as the summer festival of the Capital of Culture. 200 events at 50 venues will ensure an unforgettable night full of highlights - never before have so many events taken place. Between 18:00 and 02:00, the decommissioned mines and blast furnaces, slagheaps and coking plants, gasometers and industrial plants will become the setting for street theatre, music, artistry, dance and unique spectacles of light.

The 230 kilometre long RuhrtalRadweg (Ruhr Valley Cycle Route) was recently honoured as an "ADFC quality cycle route" by being awarded four stars by the ADFC. As the "Ruhr Art Trail", this route will be turned into an "exhibition route" during the Capital of Culture year: Artistic objects located on the side of the route will stage the topic of energy supply in an artistic manner.

The Metropolis Ruhr offers entertainment for the whole family and all tastes: Musical theatres in Oberhausen and Bochum, large folks festivals such as the Crange Fair, the new Asia World of Experience at ZOOM Erlebniswelt in Gelsenkirchen, the Jazz Festival in Moers, the Ruhr Piano Festival - the show in the Metropolis Ruhr will also continue in 2011!
