Herne
Herne is situated in the North of the Metropolis Ruhr and is a good starting point for a short break in the Ruhr Area. Cranger Kirmes, the largest folk festival in North Rhine-Westphalia, also takes place in Herne.
About 4 million visitors flock to the Cranger Kirmes at the start of August each year to enjoy themselves between the stalls, fairground rides and beer tents. About 500 carnies offer everything from nostalgia to high tech, which makes the visitor's heart beat even faster. Consequently, the Cranger Kirmes has become one of the top events in the Ruhr Area.
Herne's cultural highlight is the LWL Museum of Archaeology. The permanent exhibition is designed along the lines of an archaeological excavation site and displays about 10,000 items. Regular temporary exhibitions such as, for example, the extremely successful exhibition AufRUHR 1225! in the Capital of Culture Year give even more reasons for a quick trip to Herne.
