The City of Hamm is located right in the northeast of Metropolis Ruhr, and has a number of landmarks that few would expect to see in Hamm. The city thus becomes a secret tip for a worthwhile excursion destination in the Ruhr Area.

In Hamm's Maximilian Park stands the largest glass elephant in the world. In 1984, the park hosted the first State Garden Show in North Rhine-Westphalia, on the former grounds of the Maximilian colliery. The remodelling of the former coal washing plant into a glass elephant and what is now the distinctive landmark of the City of Hamm was undertaken by artist Horst Rellecke. At night the elephant shines with the aid of 22,000 LEDs, and thus becomes light art.

But equally few would expect to find the second largest Hindu temple in Europe, the Sri Kamadchi Ampal temple, in Hamm. The great temple festival is particularly worth a visit, and entices more tourists to Hamm every year.
