Hagen
Hagen is currently the greenest city in North Rhine-Westphalia, and as such is an ideal destination for excursions into nature. The city has four rivers, with over 50 kilometres of waterway within the city limits, and lies directly on the RuhrtalRadweg (Ruhr Valley Cycle Route), the most important long-distance cycle path in the Ruhr Area.
At the open-air museum in Hagen, visitors explore around 60 historical small trades operations and experience history up close. Whether they are forging iron, making paper by hand, printing with historical presses, or baking bread – visitors large and small can usually get involved themselves and experience the old technology directly. Thus the open-air museum becomes an exciting excursion destination for families in the Ruhr Area.
Furthermore, the artists' quarter in Hagen is a highlight for cultural holidays. So art-lovers should not forget the Emil Schumacher Museum and the Hagen Osthaus Museum on any short trip to the Ruhr Area. But the 'Hohenhof', residence of the Osthaus family, is worth a visit.
Railway fans can take the RuhrtalBahn through the Metropolis Ruhr from Hagen. On a trip through the Ruhr valley to the Railway Museum at Bochum-Dahlhausen, the train passes many important landmarks on the Ruhr river. The historical railway thus becomes an important tip for an excursion in the Ruhr Area.
