The Villa Hügel in the south of Essen is idyllically located above Lake Baldeney. As the former ancestral home of the Krupp family, the villa is one of the most prominent places of interest in the Ruhr area and is a key attraction on the Route of Industrial Heritage.


Together with the nearby Lake Baldeney, Villa Hügel and the surrounding park are major local recreation destinations in Essen. The palatial main building is also a favourite of group tours and coach trips. The imposing building lies stately above the Ruhr Valley and is an extremely popular location for events, in particular for art exhibitions.

Prominent personalities, crowned heads of state, and artists walked in and out here. From 1912 to 1915 the villa was renovated by Bertha and Gustav Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach. This resulted in the painting gallery with its side cabinets - the foundation for the now famous "exhibition venue Villa Hügel" was laid.

In the "small house" an interesting exhibition explains the family history and the development of the Krupp company.

Essen - world cultural heritage city and city of the arts. Can you possibly call a mining pit beautiful? You can indeed: the Zollverein pit XII is so beautiful that in December 2001 it was elevated to the rank of a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. The pit went into operation in 1932.
