The Ruhr Museum opened in the year of the Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 in the former coal washery in the Zollverein colliery in Essen. In its permanent exhibition on three levels it relates the entire natural and cultural history of the Ruhr area.
The Ruhr Museum has already become one of the top places of interest in the Metropolis Ruhr and is included as a tour highlight for many group tours and coach trips through the Ruhr area. Visitors experiencing the Ruhr area on a city break and who wish to learn find all important information on the region in the Ruhr Museum in a concise and easily comprehensible presentation.
It does not consider itself to be a traditional industrial museum but a remembrance and display window to the new Metropolis Ruhr. A major role in this is the location on the Zollverein World Heritage Site. The regional museum boasts extensive collections on geology, archaeology, history, and photography.

Essen - world cultural heritage city and city of the arts. Can you possibly call a mining pit beautiful? You can indeed: the Zollverein pit XII is so beautiful that in December 2001 it was elevated to the rank of a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. The pit went into operation in 1932. At the time it was seen as an ideal form of industrial architecture and an outstanding example of the Bauhaus style. MORE
