Even during the age in which it was built between 1909 and 1920, the garden town of Margarethenhöhe in Essen was considered a perfect example of functional and simultaneously very appealing urban design. Today it is a popular excursion destination, particularly at weekends, and an important attraction on city breaks in Essen.

Margarethenhöhe is still considered an architectural highlight in Essen today. The district is a popular, sophisticated residential area with a touch of flair, and was built along the lines of the garden town model of the English architect Howard.

The objective was to create an appealing residential area, in contrast to the working districts of the time . The neighbourhood was named after its sponsor, Margarethe Krupp. In order to give visitors an impression of how people used to live in Margarethenhöhe, a museum apartment has been set up in Stenstrasse, which can be visited regularly.

Bus tours in particular like to go to Margarethenhöhe, and incorporate a short walking tour of the former workers' colony into their city tours.
