Special exhibitions of famous artists take place on a regular basis. The Folkwang Museum was founded in 1902 by Karl Ernst Osthaus in the Westphalian industrial town of Hagen.
From its beginnings as a collection of art with natural history and crafts sections it soon developed into a pioneering museum of modern art in Germany.
Today, the Folkwang Museum is one of the most famous German museums of art with outstanding collections of paintings and sculpture from the 19th century, of the classical modern, post-1945 art and photography, which has had its own section since 1979.
