Dortmund Zoo is one of the best zoos in the Metropolis Ruhr. A key excursion destination, the zoo is one of the highlights in the eastern Ruhr area especially for families. With its extensive green areas the park represents a lovely variation during a city break to Dortmund. Group tours also enjoy visiting Dortmund Zoo.

 
The zoo, which was opened in 1953, starts its story with Dortmund's traditional love of animals, for whom a justified claim for a piece of nature became a reality in an industrial conurbation. Against a rich green setting the zoo offers a wonderful diversity of the animal kingdom with the zoological emphasis on "South America". In near-natural habitats such as the Amazon house and the South America countryside the unique animal kingdom of South America is presented.
