One of the most interesting museums in the Ruhr Area is the Museum of Art and Cultural History in Dortmund. Fans of culture should plan in a stop here on their city break.

At the Museum of Art and Cultural History in Dortmund, you can walk through centuries in a few steps: paintings, sculptures, furniture and artistic handcrafts from the prehistoric and ancient eras to the 20th century tell the tale of past times.

The history of the town of Dortmund, the medieval period, the effects of industrialisation, the Twenties and rural Westphalia can all be experienced here. Even the museum itself is an important part of the history of Dortmund: the former city deposit bank, built in 1923, accommodates the oldest museum of its kind in the Ruhr Area with style.

The Museum of Art and Cultural History has been collecting appropriate exhibits in Dortmund since 1883 – valuables, rarities, representative artefacts, everyday items. The museum has thus become an important cultural attraction in Dortmund and an insiders' tip during any city break in the Ruhr Area. On the ground floor of the museum are a café and a museum shop.

The city was once dominated by pithead towers and steel mills, but now the factory chimneys have long been extinguished and a process of transformation is underway. The new motto could well be called “setting out for new shores”, for today the city is lit up in a bright array of colours. In short, Dortmund has now become a modern and highly entertaining city.
