The Hansa coking plant in Dortmund is one of the highlights of industrial heritage in the Ruhr Area. It is also an anchor point and a major tourist attraction on the Route of Industrial Heritage. During a city break in the Ruhr Area, the Hansa coking plant is frequently a popular excursion destination.

On the grounds of the former Hansa coking plant, visitors can today learn about the history and present of the Metropolis Ruhr on guided walking tours. The focus on these tours is on the juxtaposition of architecture, technology and nature. The Hansa coking plant was started up in 1928. Neighbouring collieries delivered the anthracite here, where it would be processed to make coke and coke oven gas. After the collapse of the coal-mining industry in the Ruhr Area, the production areas of the coking plant were placed under protection as historical monuments. The Hansa coking plant is now one of the most important industrial monuments in the Ruhr Area

Dortmund

The city was once dominated by pithead towers and steel mills, but now the factory chimneys have long been extinguished and a process of transformation is underway. The new motto could well be called “setting out for new shores”, for today the city is lit up in a bright array of colours. In short, Dortmund has now become a modern and highly entertaining city.
