The U-Tower has dominated the skyline of the city of Dortmund for decades. In the year of the Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 the building shines in new splendour with its golden U and has become the centre of art and creativity where many events take place.

The first to move into the Dortmund U was the RUHR.VISITORCENTER Dortmund. Now there are four exhibitions on three floors to visit, also a spectacular installation of the cinematic artist Adolf Winkelmann on and in the building. Several times a day film sequences are shown with images of the Ruhr Area, also called "flying pictures".

In addition the Dortmund U also houses the "Museum am Ostwall". There are also lecture and event halls, a library, fine restaurants and institutions of the Dortmund University of Technology and University of Applied Sciences as well as the Hardware Medien KunstVerein association and the "cultural education" section.

When all seven levels are open, the Dortmund U becomes a "public place of research, learning, experience and exchange of art, media and the culture of the present for various sectors of the population and all age groups".

Dortmund

The city was once dominated by pithead towers and steel mills, but now the factory chimneys have long been extinguished and a process of transformation is underway. The new motto could well be called “setting out for new shores”, for today the city is lit up in a bright array of colours. In short, Dortmund has now become a modern and highly entertaining city.
