The town of Waltrop in the East of the Ruhr Area combines the historic roots of the old town centre in a particularly charming way with the more recent industrial heritage. With the Henrichenburg ship lift Waltrop possesses a key highlight on the Route of Industrial Heritage.
Particularly worthy of a visit is the old town and the area of the former Waltrop colliery.
The Henrichenburg ship lift, dating from 1899, is also a place of interest. Today, it can be viewed as a museum and is therefore part of the LWL Industriemuseum (Westphalian Industrial Museum of the Westphalia-Lippe regional authority). As a key attraction on the Route of Industrial Heritage the ship lift is one of the major industrial monuments in the Ruhr Area. Regular events invite you to celebrate while the ExtraSchicht, the Night of Industrial Culture, also makes regular stops in Waltrop.
