Kunsthalle Recklinghausen

The history of this art gallery, which was opened in 1950 in the former bunker at the main station, is closely connected to the artists’ group “junger westen”.

Their involvement with abstraction turned them into a nucleus of German Informel and quickly turned Recklinghausen into a much-discussed exhibition location.

As far back as 1948, the city of Recklinghausen sponsored the art prize “junger westen”, which has now been awarded thirty-three times. The name kaleidoscope of the prize-winners gives an insight into the history of German art since 1945 and the purchased works in the museum form a main focus of the municipal art gallery.
