The Zollverein World Heritage Site is now the best known industrial monument
in the Ruhr Area, and is the centre point of its creativity-based economy.
The public gallery houses the art collections of the Emschertal Museum, which display the spectrum of artistic tendencies of the 20th century. The collection includes works of naturalism, expressionism and objectrelated works.
The main emphasis is on drawings and works on paper, which are recognised beyond the regional borders and include over 4,500 pages. Works by internationally renowned artists, such as Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall, belong to the public gallery, but the focus is on artists who work and have worked in the Ruhr Area and in the north and west of Germany.
