City shopping in Essen
If you want to go on an extensive shopping trip in the Ruhr Area, Essen city is the right place for you! There are more than 700 department stores, boutiques and retail shops that leave nothing to be desired. The main shopping promenades, Kettwiger Straße and Limbecker Straße, are in the immediate vicinity of the "Passagen- oder Theaterviertel" quarter with its exclusive shops and restaurants.
The majority of Essen city centre is now a pedestrian precinct - this allows you to shop without disruption from cars and lorries. Anybody, who needs a break during or after the shopping expedition, can find a large number of restaurants and bars on Kettwiger Straße or at Kennedyplatz. The outdoor restaurant seating consisting of over 5,500 seats alone give the city centre in Essen a special flair.
A large number of event highlights also take place here, such as the International Christmas market, the Essen Light Weeks and the city festival "Essen.Original". Additionally, culture enthusiasts can look forward to Essen's Lichtburg cinema, the Colosseum Theatre Essen and the GOP Varieté theatre.
The Essen city centre is very easy to reach by car, bus, tram or train. The centre is served by 25 parking garages, with 12,000 parking spaces.
And there are not only good shopping facilities in the city centre. There is a very wide range of facilities accessible by foot in other neighbourhoods of Essen, e.g. in Rüttenscheid, Werden, Borbeck, Altenessen and Steele.
Under the motto "Essen is open", the shops in Essen City have extended opening hours on Saturdays. This means you can generally shop until 6:00 p.m. Additionally some stores are open until 8:00 p.m. or midnight.
