High culture with high recreational factor
The "Eiffel Tower of the Ruhr" rises majestically 55 metres into the air. The imposing double winding tower serves as symbol for the past and the future of the Ruhr, welcoming visitors from both near and far. Welcome to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site Zollverein XII in Essen, European Capital of Culture in 2010. This site, where coal was still being mined up to 1986, has evolved into a no less productive location for culture and creativity since the 1990's and serving as a symbol for the transformation of the industrial region into a cultural location. The spacious area with mine and coke plant built in Bauhaus style is one of the most important industrial monuments in Europe and is now home to art, culture, design and new media.
