Bottrop
Bottrop, the smallest city in the Metropolis Ruhr, offers probably the most diverse opportunities for excursions in the Ruhr Area. Whether art museum, theme park, nature experience or indoor ski slope - when it comes to a city break, Bottrop is an exceptionally versatile destination.
The city's landmark is the Tetrahedron, a work of art located upon one of the most beautiful slagheaps in the Metropolis Ruhr. The steel construction is accessible and offers visitors an excellent view over the Ruhr Area from the viewing platform. In the evenings, the entire construction is artistically illuminated, thus becoming an extraordinary photographic object.
Sport and action on the slagheap
With a slope of 640 metres, the alpincenter located next to the Tetrahedron offers skiing fun throughout the year for visitors - both young and old. However, skiing in the Ruhr Area is not the only thing that the adventure hill has to offer. The only summer toboggan run in the Ruhr Area offers fun for all the family. Brave guests can climb hand over hand from platform to platform in the high wire climbing park. Skydiving allows visitors to really take off - in one of the most modern facilities in Europe.
Theme parks for all the family
The excursion destination for families in the Ruhr Area is Movie Park Germany located in Bottrop-Kirchhellen. Europe's unique movie and entertainment park thrills film fans and those with a thirst for adventure. Located in front of an amazing setting in the form of an old moated castle, the Schloss Beck theme park also provides great leisure activities such as roller coasters, water slides and a petting zoo.
On the other hand, art fans find the "Bottrop Quadrat" to be an interesting destination - a museum quarter containing the Joseph Albers Museum as well as the Museum for pre-history and local history exhibitions.
Large natural landscapes located in the north of Bottrop invite visitors to partake in extended hikes. It goes without saying that there are also cycle paths that run through the region, which offer cyclists attractive touring opportunities. A particular experience can be had on the Way of the Cross located upon Haniel Slagheap. Fifteen stations guide the way to the cross that was erected for the pope's visit in 1992.
