Bochum is the centre of the discovery area Festspielplatz RUHR (RUHR Festival Square) - and there's a reason for that. Consequently Bochum theatre is one of the most well-known theatres in Germany and therefore a definite cultural highlight in the Ruhr area.

Bochum theatre - "Schauspielhaus" - is one of 120 theatres in the Ruhr area. Its great building holds 811 spectators and has been refurbished throughout since 2000. In 1996 Bochum theatre was upgraded to include an intimate theatre and thereby space was created for another 410 spectators. With a mix of classic and experimental theatre Matthias Hartmann has managed to position the playhouse at the top of German theatre. From the 2010/11 season Anselm Weber is the director of Bochum theatre.

Bochum

Bochum is the Festival Centre in the Metropolitan Ruhr Area, whose attractions draw visitors from far and wide. You can visit the Hall of the Century, a huge old industrial building with a gabled roof and ridge turrets which was once an old gas blower and dynamo station. In April 2003, after extensive renovations, the transformed building was re-opened as the festival headquarters of the RuhrTriennale performing arts festival. MORE
