Alpen
The municipality of Alpen is located in the far west of the Metropolis Ruhr in the middle of extensive recreational areas. Excellent leisure opportunities make the municipality of Alpen an excursion destination that is well worth a visit.
The Bönninghardt woodlands as well as the Leucht with over 114 km of hiking paths are ideal for short breaks for the family or for cycling tours. A network of well-maintained bridle paths enables horse fans to be able to enjoy relaxing horseback rides.
The best way to see the sights in Alpen when on a cycle tour through the municipality is to use the Alpen Cultural Path. The respective brochure complete with helpful information concerning 28 attractions can be obtained free of charge from the Gemeindeverwaltung [Municipal Administration].
In the Veen Museum of Local History, visitors can find out about the contemporary development of agriculture and the associated village in an impressive manner. A historical hut has been reconstructed in the sod hut using only wood from the nearby woodland, with sods from an old path being removed and the roof thatched with pre-fabricated clusters of broom shrub – an impressive structure that is out of the ordinary.
Furthermore, the lake located in Menzelen-Ost - a paradise for surfers, divers and swimmers - offers excellent water sport opportunities.
